What do Junior League Members Really Want?

January 10, 2008 -
That’s easy. We want it all!

AJLI commissioned a survey of over 5,000 current
Junior League members, covering all categories of
membership, in order to find out what’s most important to us as Junior League members.

Pam Newby shared the results at the MSC fall training event on September 30 in Ann Arbor. The Junior League of Lansing was represented by Jessica Schaub, Beth Matthews, Kate Gross, Nicole Godby, Becky Paalman,
Katie Strong, Becky Myers, Meredith Jagutis, and Cheryl Bartholic.

After all the research was in, five factors stood out. This is what we want: We want to participate in a well-run League. We want to feel personally connected with the League and its members. We want to expand our personal development and growth. We want
to develop leadership, management and administrative skills. And last, but certainly not least, we want to participate in meaningful community work.

So, now that we know what we want, how do we ensure we get it? Participation. A wellrun Junior League takes the active and committed participation of all of its members, from the president to the provisional. We want to feel personally connected to the League and its members. When we participate
in Junior League activities – meetings, committees and social events – we become personally connected, both to the League and to individual members. Participation can also mean stepping up and filling a role we might not be comfortable with. Who knows, if we stretch, we might just end up expanding our personal growth and developing some leadership skills!
