President's Message

Monday, May 2, 2011 - 9:22pm

Betsy Svanda - President

“Service is planting a tree in whose shade you will never sit.”  Anonymous

Signs of spring are all around.  My youngest daughter, Christine, brought home from preschool, some “grass” she planted in a styrofoam cup.  It started out as just little green sprouts, but now is so long that it topples over the sides.  She has a much “greener” thumb than her mother!
During this past year, we have all been able to help plant “seeds,” perhaps not in the literal sense, but figuratively speaking, for our organization.  AJLI past President Debbie Robinson shared the above quote during the time she was training me to be President.  It is a wonderful reminder that in addition to all the “visible” things we’ve accomplished this year, the impact of many other decisions and actions will only be fully known in the years to come.  We may never see all the fruits of our labor, but know that our service this year, will continue to grow our organization and nurture a better future for our communities.
I love that our more seasoned Sustaining Members have been able to see how our Endowment Fund, Building Fund and Redbook Policies, that they helped create, continue to pay huge dividends for our organization and the people of the Greater Lansing area.  I am truly grateful for the vision, wisdom, leadership and service of those Active Members who have come before us and planted seeds for the great success we enjoy today.  I am also excited to see what seeds we have planted this year, turn into amazing success stories over the next 5, 10 or 20 years!
It is hard to believe that my year of serving as President is almost over.  It has been an honor and privilege to serve in this role and I thank each of you for giving me the opportunity to do so.  I have thoroughly enjoyed spending time with you as we learned from successful leaders, shared the Junior League story with others, and rolled up our sleeves to serve in our communities.
I have often been asked what I am going to do next year, since my busy year of being President is coming to an end.  I promise you, I will take the training I have received with the Junior League to continue planting “seeds” to build better communities ; well, perhaps after taking a few days (or weeks) of watching the grass grow and sitting by the pool.

Kids in the Kitchen

Saturday, April 30, 2011 - 6:25pm

KITK wows attendees!  On April 2nd, the kids gathered at St. Casimir School for an entertaining, interactive learning experience. This year’s KITK event was held during spring break for the Lansing area schools, and KITK offered an alternative activity for thirty students from Lansing.  After the students were checked in and received a t-shirt, they first met with Mike Morelli from NBC’s The Biggest Loser.  Mike is a twenty-year-old MSU student who was one of the youngest contestants and he lost 207 pounds while on the show.  Mike shared his inspiring story with the kids and answered all of their numerous questions.

The kids went into the kitchen with Executive Chef Jason Keusch from Troppo and donned proper chef attire – paper chef hats – before preparing healthy pizzas with whole-wheat crust, low fat mozzarella cheese, turkey pepperoni, and lots of veggies. Registered dietitian Jamie Rahrig from the Michigan Nutrition Network and Michigan Fitness Foundation taught them about balancing food choices and visually showed them a comparison of calorie content in different foods.

Also, kids learned how to exercise on their own by only using their own body weight with personal trainers Elise Krieger and Justin McKinstry from the University Club. The kids did push-ups, relay races, and other high energy games.  The day ended with a calming cool down of yoga time with yoga instructor Amanda Bombay.  It was very amusing to see the kids twist themselves into all sorts of yoga poses, and it is very likely that it was the first yoga experience for almost all of the kids. Before leaving, the kids were loaded up with their goody bags, huge boxes of food, and two pizzas to take home.

Planning KITK was a fantastic bonding experience for the New Members, and it allowed them to get to know each other and learn to rely on one another.  All of the New Members would like to thank Jackson National Life Insurance for their generosity and support by providing JLL a grant for the event.  Also, the New Members are very appreciative of the time and talents provided by the sponsors, presenters, and guest speakers which made this an outstanding and memorable event for Lansing youth.

The Sustaining Line……………

Saturday, April 30, 2011 - 6:01pm
Sue Mills, Sustaining Advisor

It is at this time of year that we pay our dues to help support the operation of the Junior League of Lansing and our International Organization AJLI.  What a bargain and what a worthy cause.  By maintaining our membership we have all the privileges of membership except to vote.  We have the opportunity to partake in Sustainer events and socialize and renew friendships.  We have the opportunity to mentor Active Members of JLL while serving as sustaining advisors and we have the opportunity to take advantage of AJLI member benefits such as car rental discounts, preferred rates at hotels and resorts and teleflora discounts to name a few.  (Check out AJLI benefits by going to AJLI.org). And, if we move, we can transfer our membership to another League and immediately meet new friends who believe in the power of the well-trained volunteer.  To top it off, we have the satisfaction of knowing that the payment of our dues is helping to sustain the Junior League of Lansing, the organization that we love, that trained us so well and one that continues to train outstanding young women in our community to become effective agents for change.

The JLL began as a service league in 1931 and was invited into the Association of Junior Leagues in 1948.  The 17 years as a Service League and the 63 years as a Junior League is reflected in the age span of our Sustaining Membership.  You might be interested to know that we have 153 Actives and 270 Sustainers.  Our Sustaining Membership age wise is broken down into the following categories: 64 years of age and younger – 134 members; 65-74 years of age – 66 members; 75-79 years of age – 30 members and 80 years of age and older – 40 members!  We are a hardy and strong group of women.

I am sad to report that we lost our oldest member, Beatrice O’Brien Herrmann Richards, on March 29.  Bea was 99 years old and would have been 100 in November.  Bea was the mother of Sustainer Susie Brewster.  A tribute to Bea will appear in the June/July issue of Focus.

Martha O’Brien Seaman, Bea’s sister, and President of JLL in 1951-52 is now our most senior member.  Martha……    WE SALUTE YOU!

Other news of note…..Sally Strauss Nolen, a lifelong resident of Lansing, JLL President in 1966-67 and my sponsor into JLL, and her husband, Art, moved this month to Portland, Oregon to be closer to their family.  Sally continues her membership as a non-resident sustainer and says ‘she truly will miss seeing so many of us’.  Jan Shanks Foster, and her husband Joe Foster, Jr. moved permanently to Naples, FL this past October and Jan has decided to resign from League.   When we think of Junior League and Jan, we cannot separate her husband Joe from the same thought as he did so much to help our League by providing pro bono legal services for JLL, writing the Trust Agreement for the Endowment, and for serving on the Endowment Board of Trustees for many years in its early developmental stages.  Thank you Sally, Art, Joe and Jan.  WE WILL MISS YOUR SMILING FACES AND WORDS OF WISDOM!

2011 Winter Interview Results

Samantha Hughes, Nominating and Placement Advisor

The Winter Interview process provided leadership with a lot of good information – thanks to all of you who participated!  The following is a brief summary.

80.6% responded that you feel comfortable giving money to the Signature Project even with limited volunteer opportunities for the members. Most of the responses from the 19.4% that disagreed responded by saying that since we are a volunteer organization it is important to keep that as a focus. You would like to be more connected to the Signature Project with a more hands on role, not just financially.

43.3% feel that Junior League and the work we do is not well known in the community. Some responses on how to change that included:  focus on more partnerships, more community involvement, partner with more schools, additional PR, web ads, newspaper articles, more media coverage for JL events, and work on brand awareness. There were also some comments made about dispelling the stereotype that Junior League is an adult sorority. 56.7% of you felt that Junior League is known in the community.

43 answered the question about what member relation events you attended. The 3 highest attended events were: After GMM Social (Sept.), After GMM Social (Oct.), and Dream Dinners and After GMM Social (Nov.) were tied for 3rd.

53% feel that these are somewhat important. 16.7% feel not important, 25.8% very important.

Responses for not attending include schedule conflicts and family obligations. Most that responded think the events are great and give an opportunity for members to connect.

93.9% would not be disappointed if the Junior Pal program was discontinued.

32.8% agreed that the incentive prizes for the “All About the Sparkle Raffle” helped to motivate them to sell more tickets than required. 48.4% said it made no difference and only sold the 5 required. 18.8% responded that they would have sold the same amount with or without the incentive prizes.

45.5% attended the celebration event and 54.5% did not attend. Some of the reasons for not attending included: family obligations, schedule conflicts, out of town, illness and work functions.  Not having a dress, would have preferred a more casual celebration, not needing a party to celebrate raising money were also reasons cited for not attending.

Dental Patient Story- Miranda
Written By:  Amie Montemurro, Grant Coordinator @ Care Free Medical

When Miranda was 18 years old, another driver hit her car. Due to the accident, she experienced severe trauma to her mouth and teeth. Through the insurance of the driver who hit her, Miranda went to a dentist and had six root canals on her front teeth. Within a year’s time, the root canals failed and her front six teeth died and turned grey.

Miranda lived with dead and grey front teeth for eight years without access to dental insurance or affordable dental care.  Throughout her entire adult life, Miranda was self-conscious, would not openly smile, and covered her mouth when she laughed.

When her child entered the Capital Area Head Start program, Miranda learned about Care Free Medical, Inc. (CFMI) and came to the Dental Clinic for help. With funding from the Junior League of Lansing, the Care Free Dental Clinic was able to extract Miranda’s front six teeth and provide her with an immediate complete upper denture. After receiving her new front teeth, Miranda thanked us the best way she could—with a big beautiful smile.

Care Free has now become Miranda’s dental home to take care of her dental needs.

Without the care of CFMI’s small staff and volunteer providers, and the generous support of organizations such as the Junior League of Lansing, Care Free Medical, Inc. would not be able to provide health care for Lansing area residents in need. Thank you for your dedication to the wellbeing of our community.
