Recognition for Our Members
The Junior League of Lansing (JLL) succeeds through a strong organization of talented women who donate their time and energy to the greater Lansing community. The JLL provides many opporunities within the organization to contribute, but many women reach beyond their commitment to benefit other community projects and organizations
It is important for us to recognize our members who go above and beyond the expectations for a volunteer with the JLL. Our members work very hard and on a monthly basis, they are eligible for a "Kudos" award through the Membership Relations Committee. In May, our volunteer year concludes with a celebration. The JLL recognizes individuals with annual membership awards as nominated by their peers in the following categories:
Placement Award:
The Placement Award is given to a JLL Member who consistently goes “above and beyond” her placement job description, or, in addition to her regular placement, assists other committees or projects in an outstanding manner.
Community Service Award:
The Community Service Award recognizes a JLL member who has contributed significant, outstanding volunteer time and effort to improve the quality of life in the Lansing community, either through her own community involvement or League Placement.
Super Sustainer Award:
The Super Sustainer Award is given to a JLL Sustaining member who has given of her time and talents to support the efforts of the organization.
Super New Member:
The Super New Member Award goes to a new member who has given “above and beyond” of her time and talents to support the efforts of this organization.
Spirit Award:
The Spirit Award is given to a JLL member who embodies the spirit of Junior League voluntarism in her actions and interactions in the community and with other JLL members.
Leadership Award:
The Leadership Award is given to a JLL member who demonstrates outstanding leadership abilities and who motivates and inspires others to further the vision of the organization.
2010-2011 Award Winners:
Placement Award: Samantha Hughes
Ms. Hughes took on new projects mid-stream and really generated enthusiasm while doing so. She is an outstanding member of the Nominating and Placement committee. She attended many of the Signature Fundraiser meetings so she could get to know the members and better serve their needs. She took on a second placement as Assistant to the President early in the League year and has done an outstanding job. She attends many JLL events and volunteers for many projects. She always goes above and beyond!
Within this same category is a second award winner: Bethe Day
Ms. Day works through her reservations to present at every meeting to guarantee we are aware of the opportunities for Junior League members to give back to the community. She not only makes us aware but goes the extra mile to make it feasible. She has provided opportunities onsite as well as activities we can do from home to contribute. Her coordination of community service deserves recognition. She participated in all 14 Community Service events!!! She inspires the Community Service committee with her ideas and commitment to serving the community.
Community Service Award: Patricia Brogan
Patricia Brogan’s entire life has been devoted to serving the community. She has already received the Crystal Award from the city of East Lansing for her outstanding lifelong volunteer work in the Greater Lansing area. She has been a long time Active member of the Junior League – she was Cedar Chest Chairman and ran the resale shop ‘Garage Sales Galore and More’ where JLL held garage sales at four different locations. She has served in various capacities in the community ranging from roles on the Symphony Board to many positions with her church. She is currently devoting many hours to volunteering with Christian Services, Inc. and so many of her volunteer efforts support and include children. She has three sons and a daughter. All three of her daughters-in-law have been members of our league – Chrissie Brogan, Joannie Brogan, and Carole Brogan. She is most deserving to win this award and an amazing example for all of us.
Super Sustainer Award: Sue Mills
She went over the top this year in her commitment to the Power of We grant and Junior League. She demonstrates an admirable commitment to JLL because she is a fantastic lady and just so sweet! She has been active in League for years! She truly makes Junior League a priority in her life and her love for the organization is so obvious! Her optimism and love for League is contagious. She went above and beyond for the celebration and helping the Fund Development committee. She is always willing to advance the agenda of JLL and assist with developing other women’s potentials.
Leadership Award: Ann Vogelsang
Ann Vogelsang fills in where she needs to as well as leads; she was a tremendously supportive VP, very diplomatic, straightforward, compassionate, and helpful. She always got the job done! She goes above and beyond and walks the walk.
Spirit Award: Michelle Lange
Ms. Lange chaired the Member Relations committee and did an excellent job attending events and making sure that she offered a variety of events to reach all members needs. Further, she attended these events with excitement and demonstrated commitment by encouraging others to attend as well.
Super New Member Award: Sarah Gonzales-Triplett
She went above and beyond during the entire Kids in the Kitchen planning process. She was a co-chair for the event. Not only did she execute an outstanding event, but during the planning process she made sure that the ideas of all New Members were able to be contributed to the event. Also, a week before KITK, she had a surgery, but it didn't slow her down. She was still sending KITK emails the morning before surgery and evening after surgery! She easily spent 100 hours planning KITK and it showed with the excellent event! She has been the champion for the New Member class by leading the Kids in the Kitchen project.
